At the Red Earth Festival, we saw artist Gordon Yellowman in the exhibit hall, who was one of several artists that had ledger art on display. When Mom asked him to tell her about the history of ledger art and how he created the drawings shown in the top photo of this blog post, he pulled out a ledger dated 1886 that someone had given him that morning and showed us some of the pages.

He showed us how the art was drawn on the ledger, turned sideways, from right to left on the top page and then left to right on the bottom page of the ledger to show movement.

I have found a lot of information about ledger art online, but haven’t sorted through much of it yet. What I’ve seen so far is phenomenal.
